US Museum refused entry to a girl because her wheelchair would dirty the carpet
Lexi Hass, an 11-year-old from North Carolina, has the disease of kernicterus, a type of brain damage that causes some degree of cerebral palsy and hearing loss. Because of this disease, little has been ridden in a wheelchair. The family of the girl decided last week to travel with her to the city of Savannah, the oldest in the state of Georgia, where they planned to visit the Naval Museum. However, the visit became a nightmare for Lexi. Upon arrival, an employee told the family that the girl could not get in because the wheelchair "would dirty the carpet". "What about shoes? Are you taking them off people?" Said outraged the girl's father to WTOC chain as he remembered what happened. As explained by the family, the museum staff offered another wheelchair, but it was the right size and had the straps necessary. After what happened, the museum sent a letter of apology to the family Hass. In addition, the employee who was denied entry to the young woman was fired. The incident is not an isolated case. After the news was disseminated in the local media, a woman whose son is also in a wheelchair said he had been there at the same museum. Where appropriate, the museum staff told the family of the child that the facilities were not "suitable for people traveling in wheelchairs."
