Samsung shows Galaxy Gear smartwatch

Metanews: Samsung have unveiled a smartwatch that allows users to speak into their wrist instead of a mobile phone. The Galaxy Gear is billed as an intelligent device which "connects our bodies to data and us to the world". It allows you to call, email and take photos but currently has to be connected to a phone or tablet. Samsung CEO, JK Shin, said it is the "ultimate fashion item" and "gives you crystal clear tangible display and ultimate productivity in a beautiful package." Wearable technology remains a niche market but afficionados and gadget-makers reckon demand which will grow. A view also held by financial services firm Credit Suisse who have said the market could be $50 billion by 2017. There are technological hurdles though, such as powering the devices. Batteries need to be between five and 10 times smaller than those in smartphones, according to experts.
