Man commits suicide by diving into a mechanical attraction during Chicago Ribfest

The annual Chicago Ribfest, a two-day summer event held in the city's Naperville area, was marred by a horrific death that apparently was suicide. An unnamed individual said to be a man in his 20s, suddenly broke from the line where people were waiting to board the carnival ride "Pharaoh's Fury," an attraction in which people are swung back and forth on a pendulum. Witnesses said the man deliberately dived into the path of the oncoming pendulum and was struck several times before operators were able to turn off the machine. The deceased individual has not been named but Naperville police agreed with witnesses that all indications are the act was deliberate. The festival, which is spread out over a wide area, continued as normal with the majority of attendees unaware that the death had occurred. Only a small section of the carnival area was shut for several hours. Those who were on the ride at the time of the man's drastic action, however, will likely find it hard to forget for some time to come.
