Last chimes of Big Ben

In the midst of a sepulchral silence, broken only by the two-story buses that run through the heart of London, Big Ben bid farewell to the city with a last ringing that accompanied the applause and cheers of the thousands of tourists who were gathered . Its bells will not ring again in four years but the act, more symbolic than practical, has already divided British politics. "It can not be good for the clock," said a restrained Prime Minister, Theresa May, on her return from her vacation last week. And for the first time in its 157 years of history, the bells of the most photographed monument of the United Kingdom, embodied in the famous clock tower, will remain silent for such a long period of time. To say goodbye, some parliamentarians wanted to go out on the streets today, as well as many Brits and tourists, to listen at noon their last clashes.
