8 injured after taxi ploughs into ‘World Cup fans’ in Moscow
Eight people have been injured after a taxi rammed through a crowd near the Red Square in Moscow. Two Mexicans, two Russians and one Ukrainian were hospitalised in the crash. Witnesses say some of those injured were wearing Mexican colours, with their nation due to kick-off their World Cup campaign against Germany in the city tomorrow. Moscow police say the driver lost control of the vehicle, while other sources say he may have been drunk. Scroll down for video One witness said some of those hit were wearing Mexican team colours. Mexico kick-off their campaign at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium and thousands of their fans are in the Russian capital. Another witness at the scene said about the taxi driver: 'He was pulled out of the vehicle, he ran off but bystanders apprehended him. He was shouting: "It wasn't me".' Share this article Share Asked if the driver appeared drunk, the witness said: 'No, he wasn't drunk.' Witnesses say the driver allegedly tried to flee from the scene but was apprehended by police. . They said the driver of the taxi had a Kyrgyzstan driving licence. The two Mexicans injured in the crash were only lightly injured and are in a stable condition, according to the Mexican embassy in Russia. The accident took place on Ilinka Street, around 200 metres from Red Square and Moscow's famous GUM shopping centre. Moscow is one of the 11 Russian cities where World Cup games are being played.
