Cuba increases to 4 the number of deaths and 195 injured by tornado

Cuban authorities reported Monday afternoon that the number of deaths caused by a violent tornado that shook the island on Sunday night rose to four and wounded to 195. According to the director general of the Institute of Meteorology, Carlos Pazos Alberdi, the tornado reached the EF4 category, with winds that hovered around 300 kilometers per hour, causing devastation in several municipalities of Havana, since the phenomenon would have traveled 11.5 kilometers in about 16 minutes, at a speed of 42.6 kilometers per hour. Initially, the tornado had a width of 500-700 meters, but could be increased up to one kilometer, especially at the exit to the sea, when it was already weaker, according to the data of the authorities. Meanwhile, Roberto Álvarez Fumero, head of the Maternal and Child Department of the Ministry of Public Health, said that 195 patients were evacuated from the Daughters of Galicias maternity and child hospital, in Luyanó neighborhood, municipality of Diez de Octubre, one of the most affected by the tornado. The evacuated patients were received in eight health institutions, including several newborns who demanded extreme care. Four children are in serious condition admitted to Intensive Therapy, 14 in neonatology and six have been discharged, said Alvarez Fumero.
