Why there is so much interest in Greenland, the island that Donald Trump wants to buy from Denmark

Trump expressed his desire for the United States to buy Greenland and then suspended a trip to Denmark following the country's refusal to negotiate a hypothetical sale of autonomous territory. Why is this huge, remote and almost empty territory of interest to the United States and other powers, such as China?
