Fire at Moerdijk Factory Sparks Toxic Smoke Concerns

Chemi-Pack, a chemical plant in Moerdijk, Netherlands, is consumed by fire. 150 firefighters are battling the blaze. The Chemie-Pack plant stored nearly half a million liters of carcinogenic material, which raised concerns over toxic fumes as the smoke cloud from the factory fire drifted north to Dordrecht. The chemicals contained in the smoke include nitrogen, sulfur and hydrochloric acid; present in amounts small enough not to be considered a public threat. Moerdijk is just south of Dordrecht and Rotterdam. Dordrecht residents had been told to stay indoors with doors and windows shut, but the order has been lifted. So far, no injuries have been reported.
