Argentina: "Great pain": Fans bid farewell to #Mafalda creator as he dies at 88

Argentine comics fans commented on the death of cartoonist Joaquin Salvador Lavado Tejon or Quino. The cartoonist, famous for creating Mafalda comics, died at the age of 88 because of a stroke in his hometown in Mendoza, on Wednesday. Mafalda fans were seen laying flowers and letters at the statue of the fictional character in Buenos Aires, paying tribute to Quino. A similar statue in Mendoza, as well as the entrance to the private complex where the house where Quino died is located, could also be seen. "I felt great pain, I felt as if I lost someone in my family, we grew up reading Mafalda, Miguelito, Libertad, for us it was very important, and it is like losing something very valuable not only for us but for all humanity," said Marcos Plaza, a Mafalda reader. Jose Ramon Guede, other Mafalda reader, pointed out that Quino "had the genius to reflect a period, a generation, values that are still valid and that were immortalised in all of us." Born in Mendoza in 1932, Quino began his work as an illustrator in 1954. Ten years later he created Mafalda, a comic book translated into more than 20 languages and with which he achieved great international recognition. In 2014 he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Humanities.
