Filmed during a severe personal crisis, The Circus is, at the same time, a typical Chaplin comedy, in which Charlot is a stranger, someone who arrives from the outside, pursued by the police, to a universe that is alien to him, the circus, and in which he has to fend for himself, thanks to his cunning and ingenuity. He will triumph, but, as triumphs are usually in Chaplin's films, it is a bittersweet triumph. But The Circus is also a profound reflection on art, on comedy, the circus and the immediate future of cinema (the film, in its own way, was a farewell to silent cinema) and the artist's destiny.
