ANTONIO GUTERRES, UN Secretary General: "The world is ON RED ALERT".

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, warned in an interview with TVE that the world and Humanity are at a "very dangerous" moment and on "red alert" due to the combination of the pandemic, climate change and growing conflicts. "On the one hand we have a pandemic that the world is not able to fight with solidarity and cooperation," he lamented, highlighting the inequality in vaccination between countries and continents. "It's nonsense: with a virus that spreads very quickly in the south, the possibility of mutations is increasing, and we know that some can make the virus immune to vaccines." Regarding climate change, he reiterated his forecast that by 2030 there could be a 2.7 degree increase in temperature by the end of the century. Finally, conflicts are multiplying and "deep geopolitical divisions", with the growing antagonism between the USA and China, "do not allow international intervention". "Ways must be sought to avoid a new cold war with very dramatic consequences for the future of the planet and the international community," Guterres asked. The UN secretary general said that more "peace enforcement and counter-terrorism" operations are needed, especially in Africa. "I am in favor of the UN, with the Security Council and the Chapter 7 mandate and guaranteed funds, supporting the build-up of African forces to meet the terrible challenges of insurgent and terrorist groups such as in the Sahel, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique."
