How Russia's invasion of Ukraine began
Russia began an invasion of Ukraine. The Russian military operation by land, air and sea began after a pre-dawn television address in which President Vladimir Putin demanded that Ukraine's army lay down its arms. After months of rising tensions, in which Russia massed troops along Ukraine's borders, this February 24, Putin gave the green light for the invasion. President Volodymir Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces are defending themselves, but there are several open fronts in some parts of the country, including near the capital Kiev. Numerous people have been trying to flee the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and there is a palpable sense of disbelief. In this video we explain how the invasion began, which has been described as one of the darkest episodes in Europe since World War II.
