Sri Lanka plunges into political crisis. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence in Colombo minutes before it was taken over by thousands of protesters angry at the dire economic situation in the country, with runaway inflation and a severe shortage of basic commodities. Demonstrators entered the president's official residence on Saturday during a day of massive protests to demand the president's resignation for his handling of the economic crisis. The protesters broke through the security perimeter surrounding the building, in the heart of Colombo, despite the police resorting to tear gas to prevent the intrusion, said the Sri Lankan daily Ada Derana, which said that the president had previously left the area. Some protesters shared live videos inside the president's residence, showing hundreds of people chanting slogans in the corridors and rooms.
