Col. Gaddafi blames bin Laden for Libya unrest, sends in mercenaries
Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi is desperately clinging to power despite facing more defections from his own rule. He's battling to shore up control of the capital Tripoli and western areas, with protesters consolidating gains in the east of the country. Gaddafi told state TV that Osama Bin Laden and his followers are to blame for the uprising, and claimed protesters were given drugs to incite them to revolt. The overall number of dead after ten days of unrest has been difficult to determine, with estimates ranging from several hundred to over two thousand. The EU's considering sanctions against Libya for its leader's bloody crackdown. Meanwhile the Swiss government has ordered a freeze of any locally held assets belonging to Gaddafi.
