Queen Elizabeth II Dies Aged 96

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. Her eldest son Prince Charles has now become king. In this video, we look back on the extraordinary life of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. Born in 1926 as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, the young Elizabeth was not expected to become queen. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. After becoming queen in 1952, she went on to rule for 70 years, becoming a mainstay of British life and a much-loved head of state. Her sense of duty, to both her country and family, will live long in the memory of those in the UK and across the Commonwealth.
