TITAN: "It's like taking an EMPTY BEER CAN and STRETCHING IT".
We spoke with frigate captain and underwater rescue specialist, Francisco José López Angosto, who tells us what happened to the Titan once communication was lost. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the five occupants of the submersible have perished in "a catastrophic implosion". The captain describes it as "taking an empty beer can and squeezing it" with no options for survival once it occurs. This is usually due to structural failure or leaks, so the pressure difference between the two different environments tends to balance and causes instantaneous crushing. In addition, being a bathyscaphe, it does not have the same resources as a submarine. It is autonomous, but with limited navigation and no isolation chambers for shelter. This type of submersible can go deeper than submarines, so they are more limited for rescues, since they do not have the same couplings and systems as submarines. The only option is to use remote-controlled vehicles. The fact that the Titan submerged in international waters is because the regulations are much more lax than those of the countries.
