State-backed tourism booms in Xinjiang cities ringed by camps

Chinese travellers are flocking to the bazaars of old Kashgar, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, munching mutton kebabs and soaking up heavily commodified Uyghur culture. Despite international criticism over Beijing’s handling of Ugyhur culture and Islamic religious practice in the troubled region, the central government is pumping money into a state-approved version of its distinct culture, as part of a push to remould Xinjiang into a tourism paradise.
