Where does the tradition of hiding figurines in the Rosca de Reyes come from?
The tradition of hiding figurines in the Rosca de Reyes has its roots in the Christian celebration of Three Kings' Day, commemorating the arrival of the three Wise Men at the birthplace of Jesus. The Rosca itself symbolizes the kings' crown. Inside the Rosca de Reyes, a small figurine, known as a 'monito' or 'muñeco,' is hidden. This figure represents the Baby Jesus and symbolizes the need to hide him to protect him from Herod, the king who sought to end his life. When the Rosca de Reyes is cut during the celebration, the person who finds the figurine in their portion takes on the responsibility of organizing a celebration known as 'La Candelaria' or 'Candlemas' on February 2nd. This marks the end of the Christmas season in Hispanic culture. On this day, the person who found the figurine usually invites family and friends to their home to share tamales and continue the celebration.
