#VIRAL: Men assault 82-year-old ice cream man in Oakland, sparking outrage on networks
OAKLAND - Don Juan is 82 years old and makes a living selling ice cream from a popsicle cart in Oakland, California. However, last Monday he was robbed at gunpoint by two men. The incident was recorded on video. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the vendor was pushing his ice cream cart in the 3900 block of 18th Street around noon when he was approached by two individuals, one of whom was carrying a gun in his hand. While one of the assailants pointed the gun at the vendor, the other grabbed the victim's belongings, got into a vehicle and fled the scene, according to police. According to Don Juan's version, they took $120 (just over 2,000 Mexican pesos) from him. The police stated that the ice cream vendor was not physically injured and he folded to the assailants for fear of losing his life. Police are investigating the incident. For Don Juan, however, things have become more complicated. At his age, he told NBC News, he would love to have a more relaxed life, but he has a son in Peru who he said lives with autism and relies on him for treatment and living expenses. A campaign was started on GoFundMe to help Don Juan. Juan Díaz Carazas, who created the campaign, explained that Don Juan reported that he does not even have enough to pay this month's rent and that the assault that was recorded is only one of three he suffered in the last few days. The campaign has raised $17,180.
